Altar is a single HTML file that you download to your computer. You open it by double-clicking it, just like any other file — it opens in your web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge). There's no installation, no app store, and no website to log in to. It lives on your device, not in the cloud.

No. Once you've downloaded Altar, it works completely offline. You can plan your wedding on a plane, in a venue, or anywhere with no Wi-Fi. The only exception is if you want to load the Google Fonts used in the printable menu cards — those need a brief internet connection to display their custom typeface.

Completely private. Your data is stored locally in your browser's storage on your own device — not on our servers, not in the cloud, and not shared with anyone. We have no access to your guest list, budget, vows, or anything else you enter. It's yours.

Altar has a built-in backup feature. Go to the sidebar and click "Backup Data" — it downloads a .json file with everything you've entered. When you're on your new computer, open Altar and click "Restore Backup" to import it. Takes about 5 seconds and nothing is lost.

Yes — Mac and PC both work perfectly. It also works on iPad in Safari. For phones, there's a mobile-optimized navigation, though the full planning experience is best on a tablet or desktop where you have more screen space for things like the seating chart and budget tables.

Altar is a single-user app — it doesn't sync in real time between two devices (that would require a server, which would make it a subscription product). The easiest workflow: one partner does most of the planning, and you share updates by exporting a backup file and sending it to each other when needed.
